Blog Post 2: Why did I choose my major?

In 2015, after graduating from college, I decided to study civil engineering in computer science and telecommunications. Two years later I decided to leave it, without a doubt it was not the career I wanted to study and I did not project myself working in that area.

Throughout my childhood I wanted to study journalism, however when I was a teenager my tastes changed. Some time later I finally entered to study the career of my dreams: Journalism. In 2018 I began to study this career at the University of Chile where I have had a very good experience.



My desire to communicate was what led me to choose this career, being able to investigate and inform people of everything they need to know. I think it is essential for a democracy.

I am in my fourth year, and next year I already hope to graduate.

  Mónica González Mujica was born in 1949. She is a Chilean journalist and writer, who received the 2019 national journalism award. She was also the founder and president of CIPER Chile, a journalistic investigation medium. After her passage through the Liceo 9 de Niñas de Santiago, she entered to study journalism at the Universidad de Chile. During the Unidad Popular, she worked for the newspaper El Siglo and the magazine Ahora. After the coup, she lived her exile in Paris. Back in Chile, in 1978, she began to investigate the Pinochet dictatorship from the magazines Cauce and Análisis. In 2002 she founded the magazine Siete +7, which later became a newspaper. Blog Post 6: How Can Your Major Make the World a Better Place

S ince I was little, from what I remember, I always liked knowing things, staying informed and being able to share that information. So over the years, and as I grew up, I began to notice that I really liked that. In my family, at least in the closest circle, it was always the one who was asked about news or events that happened in Chile. Mainly because they knew that I always liked politics and information. That was one of the reasons why I decided to study journalism. I believe that journalism is important, as well as all disciplines, but this race must exist between those who maintain our democracy and well-informed people in order to build that same healthy democracy. For this reason, I always hope to be apart with my work, in any of the disciplines of journalism, to keep people informed because I believe that when this happens we build healthier societies. In simple terms, with my profession I want to fulfill my dream as a child: to inform others.

The synchronicity of work

Y ears ago, while I was in school, we developed the group assignments in Word, each one on his computer and then we met to be able to gather all our work and finally deliver it. Some time ago that changed, now with my university colleagues everything is simpler thanks to the simultaneity and synchronization of work that many applications offer. One of these is Google Docs, which allows us to work together and remotely while we see the changes made by others. The same allows to do Word and many other platforms. I fully recommend applications with work synchronization is one of the best tools, whether it is for students or workers. At least they changed my life by having all my information and work synchronized and stored in the cloud, I think we should all turn to them.
